The Hook: The Irish Cancer Society has said it is ‘hugely disappointing’ that the Government has failed to use the opportunity to cut the high rate of smoking by introducing a tokenistic 10c increase on the price of cigarettes. The increase is not the sharp spike in price that is proven to discourage people from smoking.

The Hook: Ireland will have the ‘X Factor’ in Italy this week when it steals the show in Italy’s version of X Factor. During the summer, one of the show’s judges, British singer-songwriter Mika, brought his group of singing hopefuls to Slane Castle for the ‘home visits’ round of the popular reality TV show.

The Hook: At the Social Protection Committee hearing on Thursday morning, Noeline Blackwell will argue for a robust, comprehensive & enlightened law to legally recognise Transgender people in Ireland. FLAC has represented Lydia Foy in her landmark recognition case since 1997. A dozen groups & individuals will be heard over two days. FLAC will also be responding to the Social Welfare Bill set to be guillotined through the Dail this week; FLAC will also be pushing for a fundamental change in how the government does its budgets in general – calling for a human rights and equality budgeting approach.

The Hook: Each year, animal rescue centres and veterinary practices around the country are inundated with animals needing attention following Halloween celebrations. Animals become so terrified from the noise of bangers and fireworks going off near their homes that they are driven to extreme behaviour.
The ISPCA recommend you should always have effective pet identification such as an ID tag on your pets collar and a micro-chip in the event your pet escapes.

The Hook: More than 40 tour operators from seven countries across the world descended on Titanic Belfast this week, to attend a tourism workshop organised by Tourism Ireland. Leading tour operators from seven countries – including China, India, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and the Gulf Countries – met and did business with 90 representatives of the tourism industry from around Ireland, through a day-long series of one-on-one appointments.
