Our experts in the media: 23rd June – 29th

June 30, 2014 Posted in : Experts, Galzacs, Galzacs Guide

Over the past seven days, our Galzac’s experts have been getting great coverage in print and broadcast media. Our experts featured in a range of national and local media, in both broadcast and print this week, including; The Irish Times, The Irish Independent, Newstalk, Today FM and Clare FM.

The hot topics making the news this week included; alcohol behaviour, the dangers of sunbeds, Internet bullying and humanitarian aid in Iraq.

Here at mediacontact.ie, we like to acknowledge our experts each week by choosing a few of our favourite expert appearances from the past week.

1. Professor Frank Murray, Chair of Policy Group on Alcohol

Story: Price increase to tackle alcohol consumption.

Hook: The longstanding issue of excess alcohol consumption in this country continued to gain momentum over the past week. The point put forward this time by Professor Frank Murray, Chair of Policy Group on Alcohol, on the letters to the editor section of the Irish Times, was the genuine health risks of excessive and dangerous consumption of alcohol. Professor Murray explained the HRB report which found that over three-quarters of alcohol in Ireland was down to binge-drinking. He expressed his solution by increasing the price of alcohol so that the overall amount consumed would fall. He also proposed the idea of introducing a unit-pricing system and restrict off-licence outlets from selling alcohol. He concluded by calling on the nation to “turn off the tap of cheap alcohol.”

Coverage: Irish Times and Irish Independent.

2. Kathleen O’Meara @KathleenOMeara, Head of Advocacy & Communications for the Irish Cancer Society

Story: Ban on sunbed use

Hook: From the 1st of July 2014, people under the age of 18 will be banned from using sunbeds The Act, which was signed into force by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, has been welcomed by environmental health officers who will enforce its provisions. Kathleen O’Meara was joined by Greg Canning, from the Department of Health on the Last Word with Matt Cooper, discussed how this ban is going to work. They explained that adults must make their own decisions regarding the use of sunbeds, but there will be signs and notices to alert users and also a written consent document when visiting sunbed premises.

Coverage: Today FM, Galway Bay FM, Clare FM, Sunday World and the Irish Medical Times.

Story Idea: How retail shopping explains the hidden costs of currency exchange
Expert: Brett Meyers (Expert in Currency Exchange and Financial Markets) Co-Founder and CEO, Currencyfair.com
The Hook: When shopping in a retail store, you’ll notice that the prices are a lot more expensive than if you were to buy the products wholesale. The higher prices exist because the store owner buys the products wholesale, but then marks up the prices to cover the cost of staff, insurance, marketing, interior designers, rent and other overheads. The retail shops then mark up the price even more to make their profit. Most of the time, shoppers like us don’t mind paying a premium because we enjoy a great shopping experience. Going shopping for new clothes in a dusty old shack wouldn’t be that much fun, would it? For more information, please click here or contact Brett Meyers.
