Our Galzac’s experts have been seen all over the media this week, in both print and broadcast, both national and regional media. Over the past seven days they featured in a variety of places, including; Newstalk, The Irish Daily Mail, RTÉ Radio 1, The Irish Times, Today FM and many more.

Some of the prime topics in the media this week were, the UN’s Human Rights Committee’s findings, Credit Union closures and adoption legislation.

Here at mediacontact.ie, we like to acknowledge our experts each week by choosing a few of our favourite expert appearances from the past week.

1. Paul Rowe @PaulRoweET,  CEO of Educate Together

Story: UN Human Right’s Committee’s findings on Irish school system

Hook: Last week the UN Human Right’s Committee issued a report in relation to Ireland’s current human rights record. The report overall was not very positive and found there were a number of issues in the current system, particularly in our abortion legislation and treatment of Magdalene Laundries survivors as well as symphysiotomy survivors. The UN also called for the Government to insure that there are more diverse school types throughout the country. Paul Rowe discussed the findings, welcoming the UN’s call and also stating that roughly €5 million will be needed to expand the programme.

Coverage: The Irish Examiner

Story Idea: Moneylenders – the only source of emergency credit for thousands
Expert: Michael Culloty (Expert in Debt Advice)  National Social Policy and Communications Officer, MABS.
The Hook: Because of damaged credit rating and increased regulation particularly of the credit unions the only source of emergency credit to meet a contingency need is the money lender.
There is a growing and urgent need for a micro credit fund, ideally provided through the credit unions, and under specifically tailored regulatory structure suitable to micro credit. Please contact Michael Culloty for further details.

Story Idea: Risk Of Bail-Ins and Deposit Confiscation In Ireland
Expert: Mark O’Byrne (Expert in Business and Banking) Founder and Head of Research, GoldCore.
The Hook: The EU and global drive toward bail-ins continues unabated. Bail-ins are coming to financial institutions and banks in the EU, UK, U.S. and much of the western world – with painful consequences for unprepared investors and savers. Central bank officials led by Mark Carney, the Bank of England governor, are attempting to bridge sharp differences among leading G20 countries as they prepare a landmark set of proposals aimed bringing in the new bail-in regime. The issue is of major consequence also to depositors who could see their savings confiscated as happened in Cyprus. Rather than chasing yield and higher deposit rates, consumers needs to focus on saving with safer banks such as Rabodirect. Return of capital is now more important than return on capital.

Our experts in the media: 14th July – 20th July

July 21, 2014 Posted in : Experts, Galzacs, Galzacs Guide

Over the past seven days, our Galzac’s experts have been getting extensive coverage in print and broadcast media. Our experts featured in a range of national and local media, in both broadcast and print this week, including; RTÉ Radio One, RTÉ Six One News, Irish Times, Irish Examiner and Shannonside FM.

The burning issues this week were the mother and baby homes inquiry, Obesity in Ireland, the on-going conflict in Gaza and the aid work being down by Irish charities.

Here at mediacontact.ie, we like to acknowledge our experts each week by choosing a few of our favourite expert appearances from the past week.

1. Dr. Niamh Hourigan, University College Cork, School of Sociology and Philosophy

Story: Mother and baby homes and the launch of the inquiry.

Hook: The story that dominated the headlines last week and indeed the last month, the mother and baby homes controversy took on a new angle after the inquiry was launched. Judge Yvonne Murphy, who has previously chaired inquiries on clerical sexual abuse was given the task of facing one of the darkest episodes of Irish history, infant mortality rates in Irish mother and baby homes. Dr. Niamh Hourigan explained the key features of the inquiry, her view on the choice of Chairperson of the Commission of Investigation and also maintainence of the sites of mass graves in Ireland.

Coverage: RTÉ Radio One Morning Ireland, RTÉ Six One News, Irish Examiner.

2. Cliodhna Foley-Nolan, Director of Human Health & Nutrition at Safefood

Story: Obesity amongst children and the need for children to eat a variety of foods.

Hook: Obesity amongst children has been an increasing topic in Ireland for the last decade. The high levels of sugary and high fat foods has resulted in Ireland having one of the highest levels of obese children in Europe. Some parents are not encouraging their children to eat healthier and as a result the problem is set to get worse. Dr. Cliodhna Foley-Nolan stated that children should be encouraged to try different varities of food that are nutritious. She also said that people in Ireland shouldn’t be sugar coating the word fat and people should be more responsible when it comes to their weight.

Coverage: The Herald, Irish Examiner.
