Story for the week: Poor consumers are still being charged extra to top-up energy meters

MABS have found that consumers are still being charged from 20 cent to €1 to top up their pay-as-you-go energy meters.

“This is a shameful rip-off of the most financially vulnerable consumers” says MABS.

The MABS office serving Ballyfermot /Cherry Orchard and Palmerstown areas of Dublin City carried out their third survey of shops in their area and found that the situation had deteriorated from May to December. What emerged as a new factor in the latest survey is that most shops who charge a surcharge now have removed the sign informing customers.

The Hook: With the cold and flu season now upon us, pharmacists have issued practical advice on a number of things people can do to reduce their chances of catching a common cold or getting the flu, which can make people feel very unwell for a number of weeks.

* Get the Flu Vaccine from your pharmacist- It is the best protection against the flu especially in people who are at high risk of complications from influenza. People who are most at risk from the flu include those aged 65 years and over and anyone with a chronic medical condition.
* Wash your Hands- regularly to prevent the spread of germs.
* Stay Hydrated- by drinking at least eight glasses of water a day.
