The Hook: 
“Seven hundred deaths in a day are figures from a warzone“. MSF, in partnership with MOAS (Migrant Offshore Aid Station) will launch search and rescue activities at sea, an intervention that will be reinforced in the coming weeks. This extraordinary intervention will be developed to respond to the huge increase in people who have died or have needed rescue in the Mediterranean. For MSF the current situation is a humanitarian crisis created by European policies and one we cannot ignore.

The Hook: A very allergenic pollen called ragweed, the scourge of hay fever sufferers, has finally reached the UK. But has it got to Ireland? We do not know because Ireland is one of few countries in Europe (Serbia and Moldova are the others) that do not monitor pollen.

Story Idea: Medical Card holders more likely to visit a GP than non-cardholders

The Hook: The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) has published the findings of a major study on how Irish people use the healthcare system. The study reveals that 93% of Irish adults use pharmacies and that satisfaction levels with the service provided remains extremely high. The study, carried out by Behaviour and Attitudes and based on research amongst 1,000 people aged 16 years or older, also shows Medical Card holders are much more likely than non-cardholders to visit GPs and pharmacies. Story Idea: UCC Lecturer writes book on children and international human rights law
Expert: Aisling Parkes (Expert in Law and Child Protection) Lecturer in Law, University College Cork.
The Hook: Aisling Parkes of UCC has recently published a book entitled ‘Children and International Human Rights Law: The Right of the Child to be Heard’. The book explores the historical and theoretical background to Article Twelve of The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), which states that all children capable of forming views have the right to express those views, and recognises that all children have the right to be heard in any judicial and administrative proceedings affecting them, and examines the various models of participation which have been created to facilitate a better understanding of this provision. Aisling Parkes analyses the extent to which Article Twelve has been implemented under international law, and in domestic law, as well as setting-out recommendations for the most effective ways of implementing Article Twelve in all areas of children’s lives.
