Story Idea: 8 weeks out from the Dublin marathon, have you been doing your strength training?

The Hook: Though the marathon is very much an endurance event and traditional training models pursue endurance training alone, novel research from our group at the University of Limerick indicates that strength training can improve key endurance performance parameters, in particular running economy (the energy cost per kilometer run at a given speed). We compared two groups of 10k running athletes, one group pursued traditional endurance training alone, and one included strength training on 2 days per week in addition to traditional endurance training. What we found was that those undertaking the strength training improved their key endurance performance indicators to a greater extent than those endurance training alone…
