Story Idea: Air pollution from ploughing, poultry and pigs can kill
Expert: John Sodeau (Expert in Air Pollution) Professor of Physical Chemistry/ Director of Centre for Atmospheric Chemistry, University College Cork.
The Hook:
We normally think of road traffic and solid fuel burning as the major driver of death by air pollution. A new study shows that in Europe it is not. The main cause is due to the release of ammonia from farming activities such as fertilizer use and chicken droppings both of which can lead to the release of small, toxic particles in the that air we breathe.

Story Idea: Walking the fields: Heat waves and drought in Europe expose grain maize to mould and mycotoxins
Expert: Kevin Tuck (Expert in Agriculture and Sustainability) Managing Director, Alltech.
The Hook: As combines hit the fields this autumn for harvest, farmers may want to keep a watchful eye on their crop quality. Preliminary testing over the summer months of 2015 European crops, conducted by Alltech’s 37+® mycotoxin analysis, shows climate challenges in Europe this summer have created a situation where crops need to be analysed for mycotoxins.

Heat impacted a large portion of central and southern Europe, especially during flowering and grain filling. Heat during this time of plant development can decrease grain production. Corn pollination and fertilisation is a very important phase of crop development, thus heat and drought stress during this time can result in decreased yield potential. Yield loss during corn grain fill may be as much as 3.0 to 5.8 percent per day of stress. The European Commission MARS Bulletin Vol. 23 No. 7 projects nine percent less total grain production compared to 2014.
