The Hook: The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) has called on the Irish Government to introduce a statutory entitlement to paternity leave for all fathers and to speed up the enactment of the Family Leave Bill. Unlike most other European countries, fathers in Ireland have no statutory entitlement to paternity leave. Start Strong – a coalition organisation campaigning for improved early years policy in Ireland – has welcomed the recommendation and is calling for the Government to introduce 2 weeks paid paternity leave for fathers as well as paid parental leave, available to either parent, for when a child is between 6 and 12 months old.
