Story Idea: Support awareness for World Suicide Prevention Day  
Expert: Professor Ella Arensman 
(Expert in Suicide and Public Health) Director of Research, National Suicide Research Foundation & Adjunct Professor with the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, UCC.                         
The Hook: ‘Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives’ is the theme of the 2015 World Suicide  Prevention Day (WSPD), an initiative, held annually on 10 September, of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), since 2003. WSPD serves as a call to action to individuals and organizations to prevent suicide. This year, the theme encourages us all to consider the role that offering support may play in preventing suicide. According to the recently released World Health Organization (WHO) report: Preventing Suicide: A Global Imperative, over 800,000 people die by suicide across the world each year (equivalent to one death by suicide every 40 seconds).

Story Idea: Initiative to up-skill and improve job prospects for Cork Construction workers

The Hook: Cork construction workers now have an opportunity to up skill for free this autumn. The three day training funded by Europe will give participants a certificate in low energy building construction and is designed to address a skills gap in relation to achieving tough new building standards.

Story Idea: New interdepartmental group report on future investment in early childhood education and care, great for parents, but what about children and staff?

The Hook: 
The report of the interdepartmental group on future investment in early childhood education was launched to much fanfare this week, and while it offers a menu of options for how to respond to the continuous lack of investment in the sector, it does not go far enough to address to address quality in Early Years settings. Parents and infants will certainly benefit from the proposal to extend maternity leave and to extend paid parental leave which is a welcome development, and parents will also welcome the much needed proposals to reduce the cost of childcare.

The Hook: The Cork to Galway Cycle is a charity fundraiser for Breakthrough Cancer Research. It’s a two-day event designed to suit all levels of cyclist from the serious club cyclist to the absolute beginner who wants to set themselves an ambitious but achievable target for their first season in the saddle. Irish cycling legend Sean Kelly will also be riding with the team on Day 1 and he has agreed to host a Q&A session later on that evening.

The Hook: At the forefront of improving health, wellness and quality of life through world-class food innovation, Food for Health Ireland (FHI) announces the start of a new study to explore if a unique dairy-based protein ingredient will lead to a faster recovery after exercise. Eating a combination of carbohydrate and protein sources soon after exercise is seen as the optimal recovery meal because this provides both glucose (sugar) and amino acids to support recovery and repair. However, the type of protein can also affect the insulin response to the meal, and understanding how insulin works and how it can be manipulated during recovery can pay enormous dividends for athletes.
