Story Idea: An olive branch for the Irish coal industry?

The Hook: The recently announced ban on selling, buying and burning smoky coal in Ireland for public health reasons is expected to lead to an increase in smokeless coal sales. However current “smokeless” coal is neither smoke-nor sulphur-free and although wood has low sulphur content it produces more smoke than smoky coal! (more…)

Story Idea: Support awareness for World Suicide Prevention Day

The Hook: ‘Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives’ is the theme of the 2015 World Suicide  Prevention Day (WSPD), an initiative, held annually on 10 September, of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), since 2003. WSPD serves as a call to action to individuals and organizations to prevent suicide. This year, the theme encourages us all to consider the role that offering support may play in preventing suicide. According to the recently released World Health Organization (WHO) report: Preventing Suicide: A Global Imperative, over 800,000 people die by suicide across the world each year (equivalent to one death by suicide every 40 seconds).

The Hook: As part of the Simon Communities Homeless Forecast Campaign over 2,500 people have already signed their letter to An Taoiseach/An Tánaiste, asking them to put the homeless and housing crisis at the top of the Cabinet agenda.

“We feel the level of support reflects the very real concerns people have about the growing numbers of people becoming homeless and the extent of the housing crisis’ said Niamh Randall, National Spokesperson for the Simon Communities. “Now we really need more people to follow suit and visit our website, simonhomelessforecast.ie. Together we can use our collective voice to stand with people who have been let down for far too long people. Please join us by sending your letter and help end this crushing homeless and housing crisis.

Story Idea: Adding the fizzy cola “tang” to Irish water: good or bad for our health?

The Hook: Phosphoric acid (a rust remover) has been added to fizzy cola drinks for many years. Now Irish Water is proposing to add it to the water supply in Limerick starting September. The reason is to delay the lead from pipes dissolving into the water by making phosphates. Preventing lead release is particularly important for our health, particularly the young. On the other hand phosphates from fertilizer run-offs into Lough Leane in Killarney led to a public warning last week to not drink, fish or paddle in it because phosphates promote toxic algal growth in water. So, are Irish Water certain that what they are doing is in the best interests for public health? (more…)

Energy use in buildings accounts for over 40% of Ireland’s energy consumption. New building standards have resulted in skills gaps across the current workforce. Galway construction workers now have an opportunity to up skill for free this autumn. The training will give participants a certificate in low energy building construction.
