Story of the day: Wold Humanitarian Day: Migration in the Mediterranean

Today is World Humanitarian Day and we have an expert available to comment throughout the day.

Story Idea: Recent tragic mass-drownings at sea and disgraceful behaviour by authorities on European soil have put the spotlight on the Mediterranean; where record numbers of people are fleeing brutal wars and insecurity in the Middle East and Africa by attempting the dangerous crossing in un-seaworthy boats. Three Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) search & rescue vessels have saved over 10,600 lives at sea (about 15% of all those saved) but tragically there have been too many drownings and deaths at sea. Our medical teams are also working with refugees and migrants in the port of Pozallo, Sicily and in Kos, Greece; where in-adequate reception facilities exist. The scale of this humanitarian crisis requires Europe to do more for people who risk their lives at sea, and when they reach land in Europe.

Story Idea: UN Committee calls for paternity leave in Ireland to be introduced

The Hook: The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) has called on the Irish Government to introduce a statutory entitlement to paternity leave for all fathers and to speed up the enactment of the Family Leave Bill. Unlike most other European countries, fathers in Ireland have no statutory entitlement to paternity leave. Start Strong – a coalition organisation campaigning for improved early years policy in Ireland – has welcomed the recommendation and is calling for the Government to introduce 2 weeks paid paternity leave for fathers as well as paid parental leave, available to either parent, for when a child is between 6 and 12 months old. Story Idea: Deposit levels delay home ownership dreams – Broker survey

The Hook: The new Central Bank rules around deposit levels will have a major impact on first-time buyers, according to a survey of mortgage brokers in Ireland.

The survey, has found that 85% of brokers feel the new deposit levels will have a negative impact for prospective homeowners, delaying their ability purchase a home by over 2 years. Brokers suggest extending the 10% deposit threshold from €220k to €325k would be a big help to first-time buyers, especially in Dublin, Cork and Galway. (more…)
