Story Idea: New research shows 19 per cent of Irish population currently smoke

The Hook: The smoking rate in Ireland is 19 per cent, according to new research carried out by Ipsos MRBI on behalf of the Irish Cancer Society. The poll showed that 81 per cent of smokers in Ireland want to quit and more than half of these plan to do so within the next three months.

Story Idea: European Representation at the Student Media Awards

The Hook: The European Commission in coordination with the Student Marketing Network and the Irish Times is holding a journalism competition, entitled “The European Union- what it means to me”. Story Idea: Recession directly to blame for up to 560 suicides

The Hook: A report to be presented to the Oireachtas Health Committee on March 13th will reveal that between 305 and 560 suicides between 2008 and 2012 can be directly linked to the economic recession. During the same period, a significant increase was also found for non-fatal self-harm. The report underlines the importance of both specific and general effects of the recession that are likely to be associated with the increase in suicide and self-harm.
