Expert: Emma Feeney (Expert in Nutrition) Researcher within Food for Health Ireland.
The Hook:
Is the ‘dairy-free diet’ one of the more dangerous fads of our times? Many of the nutrients found in dairy foods cannot be easily replaced by other food sources. Avoidance of dairy could set us up for some serious long-term effects that won’t be seen until later in life. Tuesday 20th is World Osteoporosis Day, and this the ideal time to discuss the importance of dairy in our diets.

Story Idea: Adding the fizzy cola “tang” to Irish water: good or bad for our health?
Expert: John Sodeau (Expert in Scientific Research and Pollution) Professor of Physical Chemistry/ Director of Centre for Atmospheric Chemistry, UCC.

The Hook: Phosphoric acid (a rust remover) has been added to fizzy cola drinks for many years. Now Irish Water is proposing to add it to the water supply in Limerick starting September. The reason is to delay the lead from pipes dissolving into the water by making phosphates. Preventing lead release is particularly important for our health, particularly the young. On the other hand phosphates from fertilizer run-offs into Lough Leane in Killarney led to a public warning last week to not drink, fish or paddle in it because phosphates promote toxic algal growth in water. So, are Irish Water certain that what they are doing is in the best interests for public health? (more…)

Story Idea: Calling All Cheese Lovers  - Food for Health Ireland researchers to undertake the largest study of the impact of cheese on Irish heart health
Expert: Dr Emma Feeney
(Expert in Nutrition and Food Consumption) Researcher, Food for Health Ireland/ UCD.
The Hook: Are we getting the wrong advice about saturated fat from foods like cheese? For years, cheese has been demonized as a food high in saturated fat which could raise cholesterol levels and heart disease risks. Irish researchers in University College Dublin and Teagasc Moorepark now think that this advice needs a rethink. A number of scientific studies published in the last few years have called into question the current negative message about cheese as an unhealthy food. This emerging science from around the world is poking holes in the argument that cheese is detrimental to health. FHI scientists will shortly begin the largest study of its kind in Ireland to understand more about cheese and its impact on our health.

Dr Emma Feeney, FHI UCD explains ‘Cheese is high in saturated fat however the composition of the matrix of the fat is special. The fat is found with other nutrients like calcium and protein. It is believed that this matrix of nutrients with the fat can potentially have a positive effect on our health. Our study will look at this theory in more detail’.
