Story Idea: Project launches to develop Government strategy to dramatically cut energy from buildings

The Hook: A major European Union funded project launched on Friday 20th March, to help develop the Irish Government’s strategy to cut energy from our entire building stock by up to 90% over the next 30 years. The Irish Green Building Council is one of the leaders on this project aimed at slashing the 40% of carbon emissions attributed to buildings. To date the focus has been on shallow measures such as attic insulation but this project is intended to enable a level of investment that transforms the quality of our homes and buildings within a generation.

Story Idea: Kerosene burning for household heating can be bad for your health

The Hook: New guidelines published recently by the World Health Organization (WHO) advise against future household use of kerosene. The reason is that there is strong evidence its combustion leads to indoor concentrations of toxic small particles, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) that exceed WHO guidelines. Use of kerosene also poses burn and poisoning hazards. The document also demands the banning of unprocessed coal but not yet “less-smoke” coal because its health effects are not yet fully established.
