The Hook: 
If you know the secret to emotional health, you know how to maintain mental health. Emotional health is about the ability to “process” emotions. Anger and Fear are two emotions that are related to “fight and flight” response in stress situations. These emotions are mediated by hormones like noradrenaline and cortisol. They also increase the body’s energy. What and how you do with that energy is what determines your mental health. If you “spend” that energy constructively, you are more likely to be mentally healthy.

Story Idea: Comment in relation to CSO Vital Statistics Report

The Hook: On May 29th 2015, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) released provisional figures for deaths, including suicide, which occurred in 2014. According to Press Release, 459 suicide deaths occurred in 2014, equating to 10 per 100,000 of the population.

The Hook: Post International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day 2015, the Simon Communities explain women’s homelessness tends to be hidden yet 1/3 of people who are homeless in Ireland are female. Homeless women have often experienced high levels of childhood trauma, physical and sexual violence (92%) which overlaps with other needs like drug use, mental health and motherhood/pregnancy.

Story Idea: Understanding the Impact of the Economic Recession and Austerity on Suicide and Self-harm in Ireland: Examining trends over time 
Expert: Ella Arensman (Expert in Public Health and Suicide) Director of Research, National Suicide Research Foundation & Adjunct Professor with the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, UCC.
The Hook: The examination by the RTE Investigations Unit may not have picked up on the impact of the  economic recession on suicide in Ireland because their research only compared suicide rates of individual years. As a consequence, the magnitude of change in suicide rates associated with trends over time was not taken into account. Recent analysis conducted by the National Suicide Research Foundation has shown that   between 2001 and 2007 there was a significant decreasing trend in the rate of suicide among men, and in the rate of self-harm among both men and women. Since 2007, self-harm rates in both males and females and suicide rates among men have been increasing……
