Story ideas for Tuesday 15th September 2015

September 14, 2015 Posted in : Childcare, Children, Galzacs15, MSF, Start Strong

Story Idea: Childcare funding must be linked to quality
Expert: Ciairin de Buis (Expert in Childcare and Family Supports) Director, Start Strong.
The Hook:
Recent media reports have highlighted the real crisis of quality, affordability and investment in early childhood care and education. Parents can pay as much as €25,000 for a year’s childcare for two children – expenditure which comes with no guarantee of quality, due in no small part to a limited and sporadic inspection process for services. International evidence shows that poor quality childcare can harm children.

Story Idea: Walking the fields: Heat waves and drought in Europe expose grain maize to mould and mycotoxins
Expert: Kevin Tuck (Expert in Agriculture and Sustainability) Managing Director, Alltech.
The Hook: As combines hit the fields this autumn for harvest, farmers may want to keep a watchful eye on their crop quality. Preliminary testing over the summer months of 2015 European crops, conducted by Alltech’s 37+® mycotoxin analysis, shows climate challenges in Europe this summer have created a situation where crops need to be analysed for mycotoxins.

Heat impacted a large portion of central and southern Europe, especially during flowering and grain filling. Heat during this time of plant development can decrease grain production. Corn pollination and fertilisation is a very important phase of crop development, thus heat and drought stress during this time can result in decreased yield potential. Yield loss during corn grain fill may be as much as 3.0 to 5.8 percent per day of stress. The European Commission MARS Bulletin Vol. 23 No. 7 projects nine percent less total grain production compared to 2014.

Story of the day: Wold Humanitarian Day: Migration in the Mediterranean

August 19, 2015 Posted in : EU affairs, Europe, Experts, Galzacs Guide, Galzacs15, Government, International affairs, Ireland, Journalists, Migration, MSF

Today is World Humanitarian Day and we have an expert available to comment throughout the day.

Story Idea: Recent tragic mass-drownings at sea and disgraceful behaviour by authorities on European soil have put the spotlight on the Mediterranean; where record numbers of people are fleeing brutal wars and insecurity in the Middle East and Africa by attempting the dangerous crossing in un-seaworthy boats. Three Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) search & rescue vessels have saved over 10,600 lives at sea (about 15% of all those saved) but tragically there have been too many drownings and deaths at sea. Our medical teams are also working with refugees and migrants in the port of Pozallo, Sicily and in Kos, Greece; where in-adequate reception facilities exist. The scale of this humanitarian crisis requires Europe to do more for people who risk their lives at sea, and when they reach land in Europe.

Story ideas for Wednesday 22nd July 2015

July 20, 2015 Posted in : International affairs, Ireland, MSF, Yeman

Story Idea: Yemen: A war on civilians?
Expert: Jane Ann McKenna (Expert in International Affairs & Humanitarian Aid) Director, Médecins Sans Frontières.
The Hook: A brutal war is taking a heavy toll on the people of Yemen- where thousands have been injured or killed since March of this year. Relentless airstrikes and shelling have destroyed residential areas, market places and hospitals. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is one of the only international organisations still in Yemen and since March has treated more than 4,000 war-wounded. André Heller Perache, Head of Mission in Yemen, will be in Dublin to describe his experience of leading MSF’s emergency response to this under-reported but severe humanitarian crisis.

Story Ideas For Every Day Of The Week 20th – 24th July 2015

July 20, 2015 Posted in : Air Pollution, Alltech, CSO, DIT, Galzacs15, Homelessness, Irish Green Building Council, MSF, Simon Community, Tourism, Tourism Ireland, UCC

Monday 20th July 2015

Story Idea: Up in the Airport
Expert: John Sodeau (Expert in Air Pollution and Climate Change) Professor of Physical Chemistry/ Director of Centre for Atmospheric Chemistry, UCC.
The Hook:
There are serious worries at London Heathrow Airport regarding air pollution. But what about Dublin Airport? It does not monitor at all for the small particulate matter that is thought to be very damaging to health and no real-time (automatic) measurements of nitrogen oxides or large particulate matter are made. So we do not know if there is a real-problem or not because, even for those pollutants monitored, the results are generally reported a week or a month after the event.

Notable Events for Monday 20th

* Run Killarney Marathon 2015
* ECB: Euro area monthly balance of payments – May 2015
* Anniversary: First man on the moon in 1969
