Story Idea: What difference does the budget make to educators working in the early years sector?

(Expert in Third Level Institutions) Chairperson, PLÉ – the National Association of third Level Institutions.                        
The Hook: While the Budget sees an €85m investment in early childhood care and education this week, it seems that the government have forgotten about those who work with young children in these settings. It is widely known that even when early childhood educators hold an honours degree in early childhood, they earn little more than minimum wage, which from January 2016 increases to €9.16 per hour.

Story Idea: Modular Housing is welcome but solutions are permanent housing with support
Expert: Niamh Randall (Expert in Housing Services) Head of Policy and Communications/ National Spokesperson, Simon Communities.                        
The Hook: The Simon Communities cautiously welcomed the recent proposal for the introduction of modular housing units to help address the growing homeless crisis. However, they stressed that this is still a temporary solution where families experiencing homeless will live for up to six months and there remains much detail to be worked out. Simon knows that the solution to homelessness is permanent housing with support and it is essential that we do not lose sight of this vision.

Story Idea: New interdepartmental group report on future investment in early childhood education and care, great for parents, but what about children and staff?
Expert: Dr Mary Moloney (Expert in Pre-School Inspection and Professional Identity) Chairperson, PLÉ.                       
The Hook: 
The report of the interdepartmental group on future investment in early childhood education was launched to much fanfare this week, and while it offers a menu of options for how to respond to the continuous lack of investment in the sector, it does not go far enough to address to address quality in Early Years settings. Parents and infants will certainly benefit from the proposal to extend maternity leave and to extend paid parental leave which is a welcome development, and parents will also welcome the much needed proposals to reduce the cost of childcare.

Story Idea: FAST week: Call 999 at the first sign of stroke
Expert: Dr Angie Brown (Expert in Healthy Living and Cardiovascular Diseases) Medical Director and Consultant Cardiologist, Irish Heart Foundation.            
The Hook: Nearly 10,000 people suffer a stroke in Ireland annually which is more than one stroke happening every hour, but only half of the population would call 999 in the event of a stroke. As part of its annual FAST awareness week, the Irish Heart Foundation has targeted 250 local FAST awareness campaigns around the country in local hospitals, communities and stroke support groups using posters and flyers carrying the lifesaving FAST message.

The Hook: The inspectorate of the Department of Education and Skills plans to pilot education focused inspections in Autumn 2015 with Early Childhood settings participating in the free pre-school year scheme. This seminal initiative which forms part of the government’s pre-school quality agenda will complement a range of other measures that have been taken to improve and support quality in early childhood education.
