Story Idea: Support awareness for World Suicide Prevention Day

The Hook: ‘Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives’ is the theme of the 2015 World Suicide  Prevention Day (WSPD), an initiative, held annually on 10 September, of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), since 2003. WSPD serves as a call to action to individuals and organizations to prevent suicide. This year, the theme encourages us all to consider the role that offering support may play in preventing suicide. According to the recently released World Health Organization (WHO) report: Preventing Suicide: A Global Imperative, over 800,000 people die by suicide across the world each year (equivalent to one death by suicide every 40 seconds).

The Hook: As part of the Simon Communities Homeless Forecast Campaign over 2,500 people have already signed their letter to An Taoiseach/An Tánaiste, asking them to put the homeless and housing crisis at the top of the Cabinet agenda.

“We feel the level of support reflects the very real concerns people have about the growing numbers of people becoming homeless and the extent of the housing crisis’ said Niamh Randall, National Spokesperson for the Simon Communities. “Now we really need more people to follow suit and visit our website, simonhomelessforecast.ie. Together we can use our collective voice to stand with people who have been let down for far too long people. The Hook: 
In Ireland, as in most other countries, cases of murder-suicide are rare. However, since 2004, there have been at least 18 murder-suicide cases in Ireland. The impact of these events can be devastating on families and communities. The National Suicide Research Foundation has examined the international research literature in the area of murder-suicide.

Story Idea: ‘Cultural change required in mental health service’

Story Idea: FAST week: Call 999 at the first sign of stroke
Expert: Dr Angie Brown (Expert in Healthy Living and Cardiovascular Diseases) Medical Director and Consultant Cardiologist, Irish Heart Foundation.            
The Hook: Nearly 10,000 people suffer a stroke in Ireland annually which is more than one stroke happening every hour, but only half of the population would call 999 in the event of a stroke. As part of its annual FAST awareness week, the Irish Heart Foundation has targeted 250 local FAST awareness campaigns around the country in local hospitals, communities and stroke support groups using posters and flyers carrying the lifesaving FAST message.

Story Idea: Comment in relation to CSO Vital Statistics Report

The Hook: On May 29th 2015, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) released provisional figures for deaths, including suicide, which occurred in 2014. According to Press Release, 459 suicide deaths occurred in 2014, equating to 10 per 100,000 of the population.

Story Idea: Understanding the Impact of the Economic Recession and Austerity on Suicide and Self-harm in Ireland: Examining trends over time

The Hook: The examination by the RTE Investigations Unit may not have picked up on the impact of the  economic recession on suicide in Ireland because their research only compared suicide rates of individual years. As a consequence, the magnitude of change in suicide rates associated with trends over time was not taken into account. Recent analysis conducted by the National Suicide Research Foundation has shown that   between 2001 and 2007 there was a significant decreasing trend in the rate of suicide among men, and in the rate of self-harm among both men and women. Since 2007, self-harm rates in both males and females and suicide rates among men have been increasing…….

The Hook: Post International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day 2015, the Simon Communities explain women’s homelessness tends to be hidden yet 1/3 of people who are homeless in Ireland are female. Homeless women have often experienced high levels of childhood trauma, physical and sexual violence (92%) which overlaps with other needs like drug use, mental health and motherhood/pregnancy.
