Story Idea: Pumping Carbon: The United Nation’s Plan B to fix our climate
Expert:
John Sodeau (Expert in Air Pollution) Professor of Physical Chemistry, UCC.
The Hook:
The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has published a third report this week (14 April 2014). This one centres on policies that might mitigate the emissions driving global warming. So why do we need a strategy for this? For one we are currently looking forward to a +4 0C world by about the year 2060 with the year 2030 as a tipping point.
What would that mean to us all? Well Greenland might melt and the Amazon region could collapse. Clean water and food supplies would be affected everywhere and we would experience many more extreme weather events. Worst of all would be coping with millions of environmental refugees who would become permanently displaced because their countries would be submerged under water…like Atlantis. Plan A is not working. Does the world have a Plan B?
